Frequently Asked Questions
Clear, veterinary-verified answers to common pet feeding questions.
Why are grapes and raisins toxic to dogs?
Grapes and raisins contain high concentrations of tartaric acid and potassium bitartrate. Dogs are uniquely unable to metabolize this compound, which triggers acute renal tubular necrosis (kidney failure). Even a single raisin can be lethal to sensitive canines.
Why are onions and garlic dangerous for both dogs and cats?
All members of the Allium family (onions, garlic, chives, leeks) contain thiosulfates and disulfides. These compounds cause oxidative damage to red blood cells, resulting in Heinz body anemia. Cats are particularly sensitive—up to 5 times more vulnerable than dogs.
Can cats drink cow's milk safely?
Contrary to popular culture, most adult cats are severely lactose intolerant. As kittens wean, they lose the lactase enzyme necessary to break down lactose in bovine milk. Feeding milk often causes acute gastrointestinal upset, diarrhea, and abdominal cramping.
